🍈 Atemoya Seeds (Annona Γ— cherimoya)

πŸ’° Price: Package of 3 seeds

🍈  Atemoya (Annona Γ— cherimoya) is a hybrid fruit resulting from the cross of sugar-apple (Annona squamosa) and cherimoya (Annona cherimola), both native to the American tropics. 🌍 This fruit is especially popular in Taiwan, known locally as the "pineapple sugar apple" (鳳撨釋迦), and is sometimes mistakenly believed to involve pineapple in its hybridization. In Cuba, it is called anΓ³n, in Venezuela chirimorinon, and in Israel and Lebanon it is referred to as achta or simply Annona. In Brazil, the fruit gained popularity, and by 2011, about 1,200 hectares were cultivated.

Atemoya fruits are usually heart-shaped or rounded, with pale-green, bumpy skin that bruises easily 🌿. The top near the stem resembles sugar-apple, while the bottom is smoother like cherimoya. Its flesh is creamy, smooth, and juicy, bearing a sweet-tart flavor reminiscent of piña colada 🍹 and subtle vanilla notes from the sugar-apple parent. The fruit contains several inedible, toxic black seeds scattered throughout the flesh, which should not be consumed. When fully ripe, the flesh can be scooped out and eaten chilled.

🌸 History & Hybridization:
The atemoya was first successfully crossed in 1908 by horticulturist P.J. Wester at the USDA Subtropical Laboratory in Miami. The name combines "ate" (an old Mexican term for sugar-apple) and "moya" (from cherimoya). Later, in 1917, Edward Simmons grew hybrids that tolerated temperatures as low as βˆ’3.1 Β°C (26.5 Β°F), showing the hardiness inherited from cherimoya. Natural hybrids have also been observed in Venezuela and Israel.

🌿 Pollination & Growth:
Atemoya trees produce protogynous, hermaphroditic flowers, meaning self-pollination is rare 🌸. Hand pollination is often recommended for optimal fruit quality. Some varieties like 'Geffner' and 'Bradley' can produce fruit without hand pollination, but results vary. Flowers open in their female stage between 2:00–4:00 pm and convert to male stage the next afternoon between 3:00–5:00 pm ⏰.

πŸ₯— Harvesting & Usage:
Fruits are typically harvested when fully ripe, chilled, and scooped for direct consumption. Their creamy, sweet-tart flavor makes them excellent for fresh eating, desserts, smoothies, and tropical fruit salads 🍽️.
