🌱 Velvet Raisin, Wild Currant Seeds (Grewia flava)

πŸ’° Price: Package of 10 seeds

πŸƒ Grewia flava, commonly called Velvet Raisin or wild currant, is a hardy shrub or small tree reaching 2–4 m in height. The young branches have grey bark covered with short hairs, which darkens and smooths with age. The greyish-green leaves are alternately arranged, lightly hairy underneath, with a rounded apex and serrated margins. Three prominent veins run from the leaf base, and the 2 mm leaf stalk is easily noticeable.

Flowers appear in branched heads from early summer to mid-autumn (October to March) and measure 10–15 mm in diameter. The 2-lobed fruit is around 8 mm, green turning reddish-brown at ripeness. The wood is fine-textured, with light sapwood and brown hardwood.

🌿 Uses:
The bark was traditionally used for rope, while the fruits enhance a kind of brandy called β€˜mampoer.’ Sweet, vitamin C-rich fruits can also be eaten raw or processed into flour for porridge. The hard, fine-grained wood was historically used for sticks, bows, and arrows by indigenous hunters. Leaves and fruits are grazed by domestic stock, wild animals such as kudu and giraffe, and many bird species.

🌱 Growing Grewia flava:

  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential.

  • Sunlight: Full sun position for optimal flowering and fruiting.

  • Watering: Avoid over-watering once established.

  • Frost tolerance: Hardy and frost-resistant.

  • Propagation: Seeds are the best method. Fresh seeds should be cleaned, dried in a ventilated shady area, soaked in hot water for 24 hours, then sown 5 mm deep in river sand. Keep the medium moist in a warm, sheltered area. Germination rates are typically 50–70 %. Seedlings can be transplanted into containers once they reach the 2-leaf stage.

🌟 Garden Use:
Grewia flava can be used as a focal point due to its abundant flowers and edible fruits. Its non-aggressive root system makes it suitable near paved areas.
