The Tamarillo, also called the tree tomato, is a fast-growing, evergreen small tree native to the Andes of South America (Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia). 🌎 It features large heart-shaped leaves, fragrant flower clusters, and egg-shaped edible fruits in red, yellow, or orange, packed with vitamins and iron.
Fruits are 4–10 cm long, firm in texture, and contain more seeds than common tomatoes. Red fruits are tangier, while yellow and orange fruits are sweeter. 🍊🍅 Tamarillos are commonly used fresh, in purees, sauces, compotes, chutneys, and curries, and can also be enjoyed for breakfast on toast or in desserts like bavarois and strudel.
Climate: Prefers subtropical climates with rainfall 600–4000 mm/year and temperatures 15–20°C. Sensitive to frost below -2°C.
Soil: Light, deep, fertile, well-drained soil with pH 5–8.5.

Propagation: From seeds or cuttings. Cuttings branch earlier and form bushier plants.
Planting: 1–1.5 m between plants, 4.5–5 m between rows in mechanized production; denser planting for wind protection.
Pruning: Trim to 1–1.5 m and remove old or previously fruited branches to stimulate new growth.
Fast-growing tree up to 5 m, fruiting starts 1.5–2 years after planting.
Flowers in clusters of 10–50, producing 1–6 fruits per cluster. Self-fertile, but cross-pollination improves yield.
Shallow root system; sensitive to drought and strong winds.
Scoop pulp from halved fruit.
Red fruits are tart; yellow fruits are sweet.
Ideal for sauces, curries, chutneys, compotes, or as a tangy addition to Kombucha.
In South America, often blended with chili to make aji sauce.
Fruits do not ripen simultaneously; multiple harvests needed.
Store at room temperature up to 20 days, or 6–10 weeks using cold-water treatment (New Zealand method).
