🌳 Swedish Whitebeam Seeds (Sorbus intermedia) – Bonsai / Ornamental Tree

πŸ’° Price: Package of 5 Seeds

🌱 The Swedish Whitebeam (Sorbus intermedia) is a durable and attractive deciduous tree native to southern Sweden with scattered occurrences across parts of northern Europe. Valued for its balanced dome-shaped crown, stout grey trunk, and distinctive two-toned leaves, it is widely used in urban plantings and makes an excellent candidate for bonsai cultivation. The species displays a calm, refined presence throughout the seasons: delicate white flower clusters in late spring, muted evergreen-like foliage texture in summer, and subtle orange-red fruiting in autumn that attracts birds.

Leaves are typically 7–12 cm long and 5–7 cm broad, green and slightly glossy on the upper surface and densely covered with pale grey-white hairs beneath. Each leaf has several rounded lobes, which together create a somewhat scalloped margin and a pleasantly textured canopy when viewed from below. The undersides’ pale tone gives the tree a silvery aspect in movement or wind, making it particularly eye-catching in avenues, parks, and garden specimens. In autumn, the foliage turns a restrained yellow-brown to grey-brown rather than bright crimson, offering a sophisticated, mellow fall palette.

Flowering occurs in late spring as broad, flat-topped corymbs 8–12 cm across, each flower about 15–20 mm in diameter with five white petals and numerous stamens. These flowers attract pollinators and add seasonal interest to the canopy. By mid-autumn, the tree produces oval pomes roughly 15 mm long by 10 mm wide that ripen to orange-red. The fruits are somewhat dryish and are a favored food source for thrushes and waxwings, which in turn help disperse the seeds in the wild.

Sorbus intermedia is notable for its hybrid origins β€” a triple hybrid involving S. aucuparia, S. torminalis, and S. aria or a close relative β€” and for being an apomictic, tetraploid species that reliably breeds true from seed without the need for fertilization. This reproductive stability makes seeds a dependable way to propagate consistent plants while still requiring attention to stratification for best germination results.

Cultivators prize Swedish Whitebeam for its resilience. It tolerates urban stresses such as pollution, compacted soils, and salt exposure, and it withstands cold climates, making it a practical choice for city streets and public green spaces. For bonsai enthusiasts, the species combines forgiving growth habits with attractive bark, leaf texture, and autumn fruiting, allowing for compelling miniature landscapes with seasonal interest.

When grown from seed, patience is required. Seeds should be sown as soon as they are ripe in a cold frame if possible, or stored and then stratified: two weeks of warm stratification followed by 14–16 weeks of cold improves germination for stored seed. Seedlings focus on root development in the first year and show slow top growth initially; keeping young plants in pots through the first winter and planting out in late spring is recommended to ensure strong establishment.

🌲 Tree Characteristics:

  • 🌿 Height: 10–20 m (when full-grown; easily kept smaller for bonsai)

  • 🌳 Crown: Dome-shaped with strong, spreading branches

  • πŸƒ Leaves: 7–12 cm long, green above, pale grey-white beneath

  • 🌸 Flowers: White clusters (corymbs) in late spring

  • 🍎 Fruit: Oval, orange-red pomes (15 Γ— 10 mm), maturing mid-autumn

  • πŸ‚ Autumn Color: Soft yellow to grey-brown

🌾 Propagation (from Seed):

  • Sow as soon as ripe in a cold frame, or store and stratify before sowing.

  • For stored seeds: provide 2 weeks warm stratification, then 14–16 weeks cold stratification.

  • Germination: Slow and irregular – patience is essential.

  • Keep seedlings in pots for the first winter before planting out in late spring.

  • Seedlings develop strong root systems before showing much top growth.

🌼 Uses:

  • Ideal for bonsai, urban landscaping, avenues, and parks.

  • Excellent tolerance to pollution and cold climates.
