🌿 Jerusalem Thorn – Christ’s Thorn Seeds (Paliurus spina-christi)

💰 Price: Package of 10 seeds

🍃 Paliurus spina-christi, known as Jerusalem Thorn, Garland Thorn, or Christ’s Thorn, is a remarkable deciduous shrub or small tree that has inspired history, legend, and herbal medicine for centuries. Native to the Mediterranean Basin and stretching through Southwest and Central Asia, from Morocco and Spain all the way to Iran and Tajikistan, this species has thrived in warm, dry climates for millennia — a living witness to ancient civilizations and biblical symbolism.

🌿 Plant Characteristics
The shrub grows typically 3–4 meters tall with an elegant, zig-zag branching pattern, each joint armed with two characteristic stipular spines — one straight and one curved — that give the plant its instantly recognizable form. These spines are not just defensive but also part of its historical and spiritual identity. The leaves are glossy green, oval, 2–5 cm long, and 1–4 cm broad with smooth edges, creating a dense and ornamental crown of foliage.

In summer, the plant produces small, yellowish-green flowers followed by its most distinctive feature — a dry, woody nutlet enclosed in a flat, circular wing, 2–3.5 cm in diameter. These unique “winged discs” remain attractive even after ripening, often staying on branches through autumn and giving the plant an unusual, sculptural texture.

🔥 Hardiness & Climate Adaptation
Jerusalem Thorn is exceptionally drought-resistant, tolerating poor soils and intense summer heat. It is ideal for Mediterranean gardens, xeriscapes, and rocky landscapes, where few other ornamental shrubs can survive. It also tolerates pruning and shaping well, allowing gardeners to maintain it as a low hedge or let it grow naturally into its spiny, majestic form.

Cultural & Historical Significance
The Latin species name spina-christi (“thorn of Christ”) and ancient oral traditions suggest that its branches were used to form the Crown of Thorns placed on Christ’s head during the crucifixion. While some sources also point to Ziziphus spina-christi, both species share similar symbolic value in Christian heritage. As such, this plant holds deep religious and historical meaning, often cultivated in monastery gardens and church courtyards across the Mediterranean region.

🌸 Medicinal & Traditional Uses
For centuries, Paliurus spina-christi has been treasured as a medicinal herb. Its fruits contain alkaloids and tannins with powerful anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and antispasmodic properties. Traditional healers used the decoction of dried fruits (1 tablespoon per 500 ml water, boiled 10 min and strained) to ease coughs, asthma, hypertension, diarrhea, and bladder stones.
Ancient physician Galen praised it for dissolving bladder stones and cleansing the blood. In herbal blends, it combines well with flaxseed (Linum), linden (Tilia cordata), primrose (Primula veris), plantain (Plantago major), sage (Salvia officinalis), and mallow (Malva sylvestris).

Externally, poultices and washes made from its extracts are said to calm eczema and inflammatory skin conditions, while internal use is believed to gently stimulate the large intestine and alleviate arthritis discomforts.

🌳 Cultivation & Growing Instructions
🌞 Light: Full sun
🌡️ Hardiness: Tolerates drought and light frost once established
🌾 Soil: Prefers well-drained, sandy or rocky soil
💧 Water: Minimal once mature — water only during prolonged dry periods
🌱 Propagation: Sow seeds in spring after light scarification (gently nick or sand the seed coat) and soak 24 hours in warm water. Germination usually takes 2–4 weeks at 20–25 °C.
📏 Spacing: 1.5–2 m between plants for natural shape; closer for hedges
✂️ Maintenance: Prune lightly after flowering to shape and remove dead wood

With patience, seedlings develop into ornamental, long-lived shrubs that enrich any garden with texture, symbolism, and resilience. The mature branches’ intricate structure, paired with their silvery-green leaves and golden fruits, make the plant both decorative and meaningful.
