π Cornelian Cherry, European Cornel Seeds (Cornus mas)
π° Price: Package of 10 seeds
πΏ Cornus mas, commonly known as Cornelian Cherry or European Cornel, is a deciduous shrub or small tree from the dogwood family (Cornaceae), native to southern Europe and southwestern Asia β from France to Iran. It is prized for both its early yellow blooms and delicious red fruits rich in vitamin C.
This species grows 5β12 meters tall, forming a dense, rounded shape. Its dark brown branches and greenish twigs contrast beautifully with the bright yellow flowers, which appear in late winter (FebruaryβMarch), long before the leaves. The oval red fruits (2 cm long) ripen in mid to late summer, resembling small cherries.
π Fruit and Uses
When ripe, the Cornelian Cherry fruits turn deep red and develop a tart, cranberry-like flavor. They are eaten fresh, dried, or processed into:
π― Jams, jellies, and sauces β delicious with sugar and citrus.
πΈ Traditional spirits β used for vodka (Armenia, Azerbaijan), raki (Balkans), and Dirndlbrand (Austria, Germany).
π₯€ Cold drinks β such as Turkish kΔ±zΔ±lcΔ±k Εerbeti.
π Medicinal uses β rich in vitamin C, they help boost immunity and fight colds and flu.
In traditional Chinese medicine (Shan Zhu Yu), Cornus mas fruit is used to tonify the kidneys and preserve vital essence (jing).
πΊ Flowers and Ornamental Value
πΌ The bright yellow flowers bloom early β often while snow still covers the ground β making Cornus mas one of the first heralds of spring. Its long-lasting blossoms provide early nectar for pollinators and are a striking contrast to winter landscapes.
Itβs often grown as an ornamental hedge or small tree in parks and gardens.
π³ Wood and Craft Uses
The wood of Cornus mas is incredibly dense, even sinking in water β one of the rare trees with this property. In ancient Greece, it was highly valued for making weapons and tools such as spears and bows, symbolizing strength and durability.
In Italy, the famous shepherdβs staff βmazzarellaβ was traditionally made from cornel wood.
Its bark was used for red dye (notably for fezzes), and leaves for tannin extraction.
