Opuntia robusta, also known as Wheel Cactus, Nopal Tapon, or Camuesa, is a hardy cactus native to central and northern Mexico. It thrives in rocky slopes, open shrublands, and woodlands, growing at altitudes from 5,000 to 10,000 feet (1,500 to 3,000 meters).
The fruit of Opuntia robusta is juicy and sweet, ripening in two flushes: one in July and another in August/September. The fruit, also called cactus apples, is oval-shaped, about 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" in diameter and 3-1/2" to 4" long. It has a sweet, grape-like flavor and is perfect for smoothies, margaritas, and fruit salads. 🍇
The edible stems (nopal pads) are also a tasty treat. They are low-calorie and nutrient-rich, making them ideal for fresh salads. Just peel the skin, boil the flesh, and cut it into strips to add to your salad. 🌱
