Japanese Snake Gourd (Trichosanthes pilosa)

πŸ’° Price: Package of 5 seeds

The Japanese Snake Gourd (Trichosanthes pilosa) is a climbing plant in the pumpkin family, characterized by thin, twining stems and lobed leaves. It produces white flowers with frilly edges, followed by round, bright red fruits that contain seeds coated in slimy black mucus. Native to regions from the Himalayas to tropical East Asia, it grows up to an altitude of 1300 meters. Roasted seeds are a popular snack in many parts of Asia.

As a perennial climbing plant, the Japanese snake gourd spreads along the ground or climbs up other plants for support using tendrils. It is primarily cultivated in China for its edible fruit and root, and it also has traditional medicinal uses.

🌱 How to Plant the Seeds:

  • Sow the seeds in March in pots inside a warm greenhouse using rich, well-drained soil.

  • Place 2-3 seeds per pot and thin to the strongest plant.

  • After the last frost, transplant the seedlings into the garden. Provide protection such as a frame or cloche until the plants are well-established.

  • Support: The plant needs a support structure like a trellis or frame to climb.

🌿 Plant Care:

  • Soil: This plant requires rich, well-drained soil.

  • Watering: Keep the soil moist, but ensure it doesn’t become waterlogged.

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun or partial shade.

  • Protection: Avoid too much direct sunlight in hot weather, as it can damage the plant.

  • The plant will start producing red fruits that should be harvested when ripe.

🌿 Medicinal Uses:

The plant produces hetero-trichosanthin, which is 1.7 times more potent in abortifacient activity compared to its relative T. Kirilowii. The root is used in traditional medicine for its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and blood-purifying properties. It can be used as a poultice or decoction to treat abscesses, boils, fevers, and sore throats. The fruit is commonly used to treat coughs, diabetes, jaundice, and other ailments.

🌱 Edible Uses:

  • Root: Contains edible starch that can be used in cooking.

  • Immature fruit: Preserved in salt.

  • Mature fruit: About 7 cm long and used in various dishes.

🌿 Other Uses:

  • Dried fruit: Rich in saponins, it can be used as a soap substitute.

  • Root: Can also be used to extract industrial starch.
