Ceratonia siliqua, commonly called carob tree or St John 's-bread, is an evergreen shrub or tree in the pea family (Fabaceae). It is cultivated for its edible pods, ornamental value, and as a chocolate substitute. 🌏

Native to the Mediterranean region, including Southern Europe, Northern Africa, the Levant, the Middle East into Iran, the Canary Islands, and Macaronesia, the carob tree grows up to 15 m tall. Its broad, semi-spherical crown is supported by a thick trunk with brown, rough bark and sturdy branches. Leaves are 10–20 cm long, alternate, pinnate, sometimes with a terminal leaflet. The tree is frost-tolerant.
