Blood banana is a subspecies of Musa acuminata, one of the two wild ancestors of modern cultivated bananas 🌍. It was previously classified as separate species under now-invalid names like Musa zebrina and Musa sumatrana 📜❌. It is also sometimes called the red banana tree, but should not be confused with cultivated red banana varieties 🍌🔴. Other common names include seeded red banana, Sumatra ornamental banana, and maroon-variegated banana plant 🌎.
Distribution:
Blood bananas are native to Java, Indonesia 🌴. They were among the first banana subspecies spread by humans outside Southeast Asia and introduced eastward to Africa 🌍, becoming ancestors of the genetically distinct and commercially important East African Highland bananas (Mutika/Lujugira, AAA group) 🍌🌱.
It is probably the only seeded banana introduced to Hawaii before European contact 🏝️, where it is called Mai’a 'Oa. The name is also applied to Musa balbisiana introduced later 🌺.
